FABER SAYS BROWN IS NOW #1, BUT WANTS ANOTHER SHOT BeatemDownAthletics.com

Since the purchase of World Extreme Cagefighting by Zuffa in 2006, “The California Kid” Urijah Faber had become the top star in the promotion because of his exciting style and relentless aggression, but on Wednesday night the king dropped his crown as Faber lost his 145lb title to Mike Brown.

After the fight was over, Faber made no excuses for the loss, which was on the 2nd of his career and the first loss for him since September 2005.

“Unfortunate, lost the belt tonight, got caught with a solid punch and TKO’ed first round,” Faber stated. “I’d rather go out in a blaze of glory than wither away. I’ll be back, I’ll be back for sure.”

Following his performance, Faber had a chance to review the fight tape and also stated that he hasn’t been rocked in a fight like that since the only other loss in his professional career to Tyson Griffin.

“I watched it, I basically came with a back elbow and just got caught clean with a right,” said Faber. “I came into it and he was throwing hard and we just collided and he just followed me down and came with some punches so it is what it is.”

With the WEC’s featherweight division growing at a rapid pace and more top fighters stepping in at every event, the now former champ is more than confident that the fighter who beat him is the #1 competitor at 145lbs.

“Yes, he is 100%,” Faber responded when asked if Mike Brown was the top featherweight in the world now. “We’ll see though.”

While there has been no word if there was anything such as an automatic rematch clause in the fight contract, Faber is more than open for another shot at Brown, but also understands there are other fighters out there hungry for an opportunity for the title.

“I’d love to fight him again. I got caught with a big punch, if they give me another opportunity right away, I’d love that,” Faber commented. “There’s Jose Aldo who looks really, really impressive, there’s Leonard Garcia who just took out Jens, and was very impressive so however it goes. I think I’d love another chance to fight because I feel I didn’t get to put out a full effort because the fight ended so quickly and we’ll just wait and see.”

And as far as when the former champion could compete again he closed with a laugh.

“Hopefully soon cause I’m going to need the cash now.”

UFC 93 SELLS OUT QUICK IN IRELAND - BEAT EM DOWN ATHLETICS

The Ultimate Fighting Championship on Wednesday announced that it has sold out its Jan. 17 event at the O2 Arena in Dublin, Ireland. The UFC released a statement saying it had sold more than 6,000 tickets in the opening week of ticket sales for UFC 93, with the full inventory of more than 10,000 tickets sold out less than two weeks later.

“This is our seventh successive sell-out in the British Isles since April of 2007," said UFC UK Division President Marshall Zelaznik. "We now hold records in six of the biggest arenas in all of Europe. We have the most dedicated and passionate fans in sport and we are thrilled to be bringing some of the biggest names in the sport to the Emerald Isle early in the New Year.”

UFC 93 is slated to feature a light heavyweight main event between Rich Franklin and Dan Henderson, as well as another 205-pound feature bout pitting Mark Coleman vs. Mauricio "Shogun" Rua.

VIDEO - Urijah Faber vs Mike Brown Nov 5th WEC UFC

Mike Brown is a seasoned veteran in mixed martial arts who has competed all over the world, including as a lightweight in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. But Wednesday night at 8 p.m. EST live on Versus, Mike Brown enters the biggest fight of his career when he challenges No. 1 ranked featherweight Urijah Faber for the World Extreme Cagefighting 145-pound title.

"It's a huge chance. It's the biggest fight of my career," said the American Top Team trained fighter. "Every fighter's goal is to be the best. Urijah's the best, so he's the guy you've got to beat to get to that goal."

On a seven-fight win streak having not lost in nearly three years, Brown has earned his shot. But putting the title aside, the 33-year-old fighter sees the opportunity as a win-win situation.

"It's extra nice because he's promoted so much through the WEC. He has a lot of fans and a large following, so you'll get that much more exposure for the fight," said Brown. "It's really a no-lose situation. He's a great fighter, so I have nothing to lose by going into this fight. And those are the easiest ones, I think, to fight, the ones where you have nothing to lose."

Brown is confident headed into the WEC 36 main event, and he attributes his American Top Team training partners for providing that self-assurance.

"We have so many great fighters here that you know what's out there. And you know that it doesn't get any better than the guys you're training with," he stated. "We've got great grapplers, great stand up fighters, great wrestlers. We've got it all here, so I know that I'm always going to be comfortable in the fight. I know there's going to be no surprises."

"We have a lot of talent at 155, so I train with a lot of those guys. One of my favorite training partners probably is Yves Edwards. He's the guy I train with a lot. He's not really Urijah's style, but he can fight right handed, so I've been training with him a lot," explained Brown. "To get specific for Urijah, we've got a little guy, Alexis Vila, who was an Olympic bronze medalist in the sport of wrestling. He's like 2-0 or 3-0 as an MMA fighter... I've been training with him to get that same look as far as speed and that wrestling look. Training's been good."

The two were originally scheduled to fight Sept. 10, but the event was pushed back to Nov. 5 due to Hurricane Ike. The postponement was disappointing to Brown.

"I was pretty bummed about it. I trained pretty hard for a solid eight weeks and I poured everything into it, so I was pretty worn out. I was ready to fight," commented the Maine native. "Pushing it back eight weeks was tough, but all the fighters are in the same boat. I just went back to work and did it again."

UFC CHRIS LEBEN TESTS POSITIVE FOR STEROIDS

The Ultimate Fighting Championship has suspended fighter Chris Leben for nine months and fined him one-third of his fight purse following a positive drug test for the steroid Stanazolol after his loss to Michael Bisping at UFC 89 in England in October. The news was reported by Dave Meltzer of Yahoo! Sports.

The UFC has long stood by drug testing of the athletes competing for the promotion, even overseas in England where they have no formal athletic commission to handle the process.

At these events, the UFC leans on former head of the Nevada State Athletic Commission and now UFC vice president, Marc Ratner, to handle the duties normally handled by an overseeing committee like the athletic commissions in the United States.

Leben has never tested positive before, but this is still a major setback in his career.

“I am obviously disappointed with Chris, who has made great strides getting his life back on track,” UFC president Dana White told Meltzer. “To his credit, he has taken responsibility for his actions and is accepting the punishment that has been handed down. But as always, the UFC puts the safety of its athletes first and foremost, and we won’t tolerate anyone using performance enhancing drugs in our organization.”

According to the report, the UFC tested all 22 athletes on the card before and after the fights, and Leben to date is the only fighter who has tested positive for illegal substances.
